What reaction time actually does in Valorant

Here is the honest version, and it is not what most reaction-time pages selling you a trainer will say: your raw reflex is one of the smaller inputs into whether you win a duel. It matters, but it sits behind crosshair placement, positioning, sound cues and simply knowing where somebody is likely to be.

The numbers make the case. A skilled ranked player reacts in about 215 ms and an elite pro in about 175 ms. That is a gap of roughly four hundredths of a second. Nobody climbs from Silver to Radiant on four hundredths of a second. What separates them is that the pro already had the crosshair on the head, so their reaction only had to cover the click, not the click plus a panicked flick across the screen.

Peeker's advantage: why you die behind cover

If you have ever swung a corner, gone back behind the wall and still died, you were not imagining it and your reaction time was not the problem. The player peeking sees you fractionally before you see them, because their movement has to reach the server and come back to your machine before your screen can draw it. You are always reacting to information that is slightly old.

Valorant is built to keep that window small. Riot runs its competitive servers at a high tick rate specifically so positions update more often than they did in older shooters, which shrinks the gap but cannot delete it, because the speed of light and your internet route still exist. The practical conclusion is the useful bit: peeker's advantage is a networking fact, not a skill issue, so the counter is positional. Hold tighter angles, pre-aim the spot rather than the space, and make the enemy peek into your crosshair instead of swinging into theirs.

Why your in-game reaction feels slower than this test

This page measures a simple reaction: one signal, one response. A real duel is a choice reaction stacked on top of an aiming task. You have to notice motion, decide it is an enemy and not a teammate or a shadow, move the crosshair onto them, and only then click. Each of those stages costs time, which is why your in-game feel will always lag your score here.

You can measure those extra stages separately. The choice reaction test shows what deciding between options costs you, and the aim trainer measures the find-and-click movement that Valorant actually demands. Run all three and the picture of your own bottleneck gets much clearer than one number can give you.

What actually helps, ranked honestly

  • Crosshair placement beats reflexes. Head level, pre-aimed at the angle you are about to clear. It removes distance your reaction would otherwise have to cover.
  • Fix your hardware lag before your reflexes. A wired mouse and a higher refresh rate genuinely remove milliseconds. Your brain will not get 30 ms faster; your setup can.
  • Warm up. A few minutes in the range before ranked is the single most reliable in-session gain, and it is why every pro does it.
  • Sleep, honestly. Tiredness does not just slow you, it makes you inconsistent, which costs more rounds than a slow average ever will.
  • Do not grind reaction trainers expecting miracles. Practice sharpens the decision step a little, then biology sets a floor near 100 ms.

On a click test like this one, anything under 250 ms is quick and under 220 ms is solid competitive territory. Trained FPS players cluster around 190 ms and the very best esports pros near 175 ms. The typical adult sits at 273 ms, so a decent Valorant player is usually only 50 to 80 ms quicker than average, not in a different league.
Do Valorant pros really have faster reaction times?
A little, but far less than people assume. Pros land roughly 175 to 190 ms against about 215 ms for a skilled ranked player. That gap is real but small, which is exactly why raw reaction is a poor explanation for the skill difference. Crosshair placement, positioning and knowing where the enemy will be do far more work.
Why do I die behind cover in Valorant?
That is peeker’s advantage. The player peeking sees you slightly before your screen shows them, because their movement has to travel to the server and back to you. You are reacting to information that is already a moment old, so no amount of reaction training fully fixes it. Holding a tighter angle and pre-aiming does.
Why is my in-game reaction slower than this test?
Because this test measures one thing: a signal appears, you click. In game you have to notice the enemy, decide it is an enemy, move the crosshair onto them and then fire. That is choice reaction plus aim, and it always reads slower. The choice reaction test and the aim trainer measure those extra steps.
Does a higher refresh monitor improve reaction time?
It does not speed up your brain, but it does cut the delay between something happening and you seeing it. A 60 Hz screen can hold a finished frame for up to about 16 ms; a 240 Hz screen for about 4 ms. That is real time, which is why we measure your display and subtract it rather than pretending it is part of your reflexes.
