Why Is My Reaction Time So Slow? The Honest Reasons

I typed this exact question into Google once, genuinely a little worried. I had just scored 312 ms on some reaction test, half-remembered that “the average is 250 ms”, and quietly decided my brain was going soft. It wasn’t. The test was quietly adding time, I’d had four hours of sleep, and I was comparing my number against the wrong benchmark anyway. If you are here for the same reason, let me save you the spiral.

Most “slow” reaction times are not your brain at all. A browser test adds 10 to 50 ms of screen and mouse lag, tiredness adds more, and the “average” you are measuring yourself against is often the lab figure (200-250 ms), not the online one (about 273 ms). A genuinely slow reaction is rare; far more often it is device lag, one bad night of sleep, or the wrong number to compare against.

Let me go through the real reasons in the order they actually matter, because the fix is different for each.

You are probably comparing against the wrong number

This is the big one, and it fixes half the people who land on this page. The “200 ms” or “250 ms” you read in an article is almost always a lab figure, measured on dedicated hardware. What an online click test records is slower, because a browser cannot avoid a little lag. Across the largest public dataset, more than 81 million clicks, the median online reaction time is about 273 ms, and the mean is 284 ms. So if you scored 290 or 300 ms, you are not slow. Your screen and mouse are stealing 10 to 50 ms

Here is the part almost every test hides. When the screen turns green, your monitor does not show it instantly. A 60 Hz display only refreshes every ~16 ms, so the green can sit there finished for up to a frame before your eyes even receive it. Then your mouse, your operating system and the browser each add a little more. None of that delay is your reflexes, yet it all lands on your score, making you look slower than you are.

You are tired, and tiredness wrecks reaction time

Once the equipment is accounted for, the single biggest real cause of a slow score is sleep. And it is not just that a tired brain is slower on average, it is that it becomes inconsistent. Your quick reactions stay roughly quick, and then out of nowhere you drop a 400 ms response because your attention blinked for a moment. If your scores are all over the place from one attempt to the next, poor sleep or plain mental fatigue is the usual suspect. I notice it on myself constantly: after a bad night my whole distribution gets spiky and unreliable.

The test might simply be harder than a plain click

Not all reaction tests measure the same thing, and some are built to be slower. A simple reaction test asks you to respond to one signal, one response, as fast as you can. A choice reaction test makes you decide between options first, and that decision costs time, roughly a fixed slice for every doubling of the choices. That is Hick’s law, and it means a choice test will always read slower than a simple one, by design, not because you got worse.

The stimulus matters too. Sound is processed faster than light, so if you have only ever done a visual test, try an audio reaction test and watch your number drop by 30 to 40 ms. You did not suddenly get quicker, you just gave your nervous system an easier signal.

It might just be your age, and that is fine

Reaction time is not fixed across your life. It sharpens through childhood, peaks in the early twenties, holds fairly flat through the thirties, then slows a few milliseconds every decade after. A 300 ms score is mid-pack for a twenty-year-old and genuinely quick for someone in their sixties. “Slow” only means anything once you know who you are being compared against. When slow is actually worth a second look

Almost always the reasons above explain it. But if your reaction time is consistently very slow, say over 400 ms rested, on a real mouse, on a simple visual test, and especially if it has changed noticeably from what you used to score, then it is worth paying attention to. Deep fatigue, some medications, alcohol and certain health conditions all slow reactions, and a sudden change is more informative than any single number. This is not medical advice and a click test is not a diagnostic tool, but a real, sustained shift is the one case where the number is telling you something beyond “you were tired or on a laggy screen”.

So what should you actually do?

Stop guessing from a random test that will not show its own error bars. Take one that corrects for device lag, and get your true number first. Then read it properly:

  1. Take the corrected reaction test and note the device-lag-corrected figure, not the raw one.
  2. Check where it ranks on the percentile table or the is my reaction time good? checker. Most people who thought they were slow discover they are average or better.

Nine times out of ten, “why is my reaction time so slow” turns out to have a boring, fixable answer: a laggy screen, a short night, or a number read out of context. Get the honest figure, compare it against the right people, and the panic usually disappears.
